The Mobility Snapshot campaign, conducted by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, took place from 20th to 26th of May, 2024. This initiative was part of the #CommitToAct campaign and Parisar conducted it at at two major locations in India: Swargate in Pune and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai.
Objectives
- Assess Road Safety Conditions: To evaluate the safety and adequacy of road facilities for various users.
- Collect Data: To gather quantitative data on the number of different types of road users.
- Advocate for Improvements: To use the collected data to advocate for improved road safety measures with government authorities.
Data Collection
During the campaign, Parisar counted different categories of road users: Pedestrians, Cyclists, Motorcyclists, Cars, Vans, Buses/Trucks
Key Findings
The Mobility Snapshot campaign tools revealed significant inadequacies in road facilities for pedestrians, highlighting areas that require urgent attention and improvement.

Advocacy Efforts
Based on the findings from the campaign, organisations like the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, and ourselves, continue to do the following:
- Engage with Government Officials: Advocate for the implementation of safer road infrastructure. We have presented our submissions to Pune's traffic deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in the form of a letter for improving the Swargate junction.
- Promote Awareness: Increase public awareness about road safety issues and the need for better facilities.
- Suggest Improvements: Recommend specific measures such as the construction of pedestrian pathways, better signage, and enhanced crosswalks to ensure the safety of all road users.
The location for the mobility snapshot campaign was selected considering the following factors:
- A place that is widely known and recognisable to people near a popular train/bus station or a public transport hub or a shopping/market area AND
- A place that has plenty of pedestrian traffic mixing with motorised vehicles AND
- A place that LACKS at least one of the following:
- formal pedestrian crossing
- segregated footpath
- traffic calming, such as a speed hump on approach to the intersection and/or
- traffic lights for motorised vehicles and/or
- Speed limit of 30 km/h or less.
