Campaign for Nagar Swaraj (Campaign for City Governance)

Nagar Swaraj translates to City-self rule and aims at strengthening democratic participation in urban local governance structures. Under the project, we have been able to conduct three workshops with specific focus on different social groups and localities within Delhi, as these issues figure differently in different social locations due to spatial segregation.

The First workshop was done in collaboration with the Naz Foundation with a focus on Transgender and Gender Variant communities. The second workshop was done in collaboration with Northeast Support Centre & Helpline and North East Place Association, Burari (NEPAB). The third workshop took place at The Community Library Project, Khirki Extension, Delhi, with the local residents. (“City Game” at Play at The Community Library Project, Khirki, Delhi)

Essentially, we used the method of “City Games”, an interactive gameplay that allows for participation from the players, to engage in conversations on Urban Local Governance as they deliberate on different prompts and issues together, and try to come to consensual decisions. We also use methods like art, drawing on maps, and a mix of activities engaging participants in meaningful conversations about the city they envision. We have an upcoming workshop in April with the young adult population of 15 and above residing in the Partrachar Basti, Timarpur, Delhi.
