Mapping Delhi Water Bodies

The research looks into the effects of swift urban expansion on water bodies in Delhi, and investigates the ecological and social importance of these bodies to determine how well state-introduced rejuvenation programs work. Specifically, we are looking at the major water bodies of Delhi, intrigued by the upcoming infrastructural development projects.

In this regard, the first step was to gauge the ground reality. Discussions were held with Diwan Singh, a senior activist, who shared historical contexts of the space and highlighted the challenges and solutions he pursued in reviving the water body near his residence.

Additionally, conversations with academician-researcher Ritu Rao revealed that originally in Delhi water bodies catered to irrigation purposes. However, over time, urban expansions have changed their functions, structure and availability. A preliminary field visit highlighted disturbing patterns where concrete structures restricted water from natural infiltration into groundwater reserves. The research outcomes contribute to an understanding of how urbanisation affects the ecology of water bodies. Field work is in progress, and new insights will be shared soon!
